Taylor York received a B.A. in Women’s and Gender Studies, History, and English from West Virginia University (2016). Taylor’s research interests include applying critical perspectives to popular media using queer theory, cultural studies, and subaltern studies. Taylor intends to use their graduate studies to do research on music as a form of resistance for marginalized groups. Previously they have analyzed enslaved people’s songs in the U.S. antebellum South and how resistance manifests (whether it is through community building, preserving culture, or sending messages through a “hidden transcript”). Taylor would like to continue studying its influences on contemporary black culture and movements throughout the Civil Rights Movement, Black Lives Matter, and various other popular lyrics within contemporary music (such as Ibeyi, Lizzo, and Tunde Olaniran).
