WGSS to award $1,000 to support success of students interested in LGBTQ Studies

Applications for the 2024-2025 Rodler-Wood Endowed Scholarship are now open until Monday, April 29, 2024. 

Established in 2004 by University of Maryland alum James Wood ('72) and his partner Peter Rodler (1936-2010), the scholarship provides $1000 to support student success in their upcoming academic year. Selection is based on one or more of the following criteria: demonstrated financial need, hardship based on sexual orientation, academic interest in LGBTQ Studies and extracurricular activities on behalf of LGBTQ issues.

How to Apply

Undergraduate and graduate students who will be full-time students in the 2024-2025 academic year are encouraged to send the following application materials as a single pdf file by email to wgss@umd.edu with Rodler-Wood Scholarship Application in the subject line.

Application Materials

  • 1-2 page written statement detailed qualifications based on the selection criteria
  • Current Unofficial Transcript
  • 1 Letter of Reference sent directly to wgss@umd.edu which directly addresses the scholarship criteria. A UMD-affiliated recommender is highly preferred.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated academic interest in LGBTQ+ Studies
  • Active participation in extracurricular activities on behalf of LGBTQ+ issues
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Hardship based on sexual orientation
